Want To Do Something In Wake of Sandy Creek? Arm our Nation’s Teachers.
“Gun Free Zones” are so incandescently stupid that only college-educated liberals could take the idea seriously. Review any recent mass shooting and you’ll not find one person who was saved by a “No Guns Allowed” sign. Bringing a placard to a gunfight is an idea that richly deserves unfettered ridicule by every man woman and child who gives a damn about public safety in a world where monsters live.
Teachers should be armed. Any teacher who is an otherwise law-abiding citizen and has a mind to should be permitted to carry a firearm. Personally, I would like to see teachers carry a firearm on their hip as a public warning to any who might menace their charges.
An adult who is not to be trusted with a firearm is not to be trusted with the welfare of a child. There is no reason why a grown-up with an advanced education degree should not be able to carry a firearm responsibly (though perhaps I just invalidated my own argument).
The bitter irony is that as it became commonly understood that adults in any given school were likely to be armed, these sort of mass shootings would taper off. Whatever madness that drives a man to murder innocents does not deprive them of rational thought. Depraved people plan and plot. They are not irrational. Predators seek the weak, and nothing is weaker than a gun-free zone filled with children and self-righteous liberals. Arm schools and we’ll see as lunatics are put down before they rack up double digit body counts, the calculus will begin to change in the minds of the mad.
Should teachers, parents and staff of schools begin arming themselves, inevitably an unintentional event will occur. In that circumstance, responsible adults will have to balance the injury or death of one against the death of dozens made possible by a gun-free zone.
During the Sandy Creek massacre, a young teacher is reported to have hid her children. She then confronted the killer, telling him the children were in the gym. Armed with only a deception, the murderer took her life though her actions saved her students. It is unconscionable that under state and federal laws staff and faculty of our nation’s schools have nothing more than their wits as defense.
My lovely and gracious wife is a concealed carry permit holder, but she enters her workplace every day without the crucial tool needed to equalize herself should – God forbid – a lunatic show up with murder in his heart. She works in an environment where arming herself would be as illegal as hell. She is 100 percent mama bear, and would hurl her life into the chasm to save a child if called upon. It ought not be necessary. If society demands we do something in the wake of this latest shooting, what we need to do is arm the staff in school, and make it known that the neighborhood schoolhouse is no longer a killing field.
